CLOUDYGROUP’S APP-PRENTICE CHALLENGE BOASTS AN EXCITING LINE-UP & FESTIVAL WINNERS’ SHOWDOWN
BUCKINGHAM – Buckingham’s Cloudy Group is proud to announce that the App-prentice Challenge will return this June in star-studded form as big TV names from BBC’s The Apprentice and Dragon’s Den feature in the programme.
This year’s event format has a wider scope than previous years’ shaped by CloudyGroup’s extended event partners. The major shifts are led by the involvement of more schools and a move to June that culminates in a unique celebration of enterprise where winning students will participate in Peter Jones Foundation’s EntFest 2019, hosted by the University of Buckingham, Buckingham Enterprise and Innovation Unit.
The programme keeps to its roots as an experience-based challenge for Key Stage 4 students but has evolved into a bolder format for 2019 with the increase in supporting event partners.
“The App-Prentice Challenge presents an opportunity for young people to get hands-on with Microsoft tools for a practical education in collaboration, organisation and modern workplace skills,” says David Hall, Director of CloudyGroup.
“We know from the success of last year’s event that the students benefit academically, and that they also enjoy the process of competing in teams, creatively and technically, to conceive an App.
“More recently, with some of last year’s winners having joined us for work experience to develop their App and complete an App project for Wolverton & Greenleys Town Council, we’ve been able to appreciate the positive effect the event has on the future career prospects of these young people as well as on employer engagement.”
Hall continues: “This project is a central component of the Cloudy Enterprise Academy, where we work with local businesses to help young people into digital services through grass roots computer coding clubs and school technology projects.
We’re thrilled with the uptake in partners supporting us this year. They’re integral to how we’re planning to reach impressive new heights with App-Prentice Challenge 2019. Who knows where it will go from here!”
CloudyGroup’s local partners Technovisual Education and Buckinghamshire Thames Valley Local Enterprise Partnership (BTVLEP) are proud to be supporting the event again this year alongside Microsoft Education. New partners to join forces with the programme include: McAfee, Tech Data and British TV presenter, Nick Hewer.
The Readiness Company, Study Higher and the University of Buckingham, Buckingham Enterprise and Innovation Unit are the three new event sponsors driving investment in the project and a new focus on being more accessible, educationally far-reaching and more entertaining.
The Challenge will take a similar format to BBC show The Apprentice where the “candidates” will compete in teams to complete tasks that put the Key Stage 4 students’ critical-thinking, time-management and teamwork skills to the test.
The digital programme has a stronger focus on accessibility and video for 2019 as the students will be tasked with vlogging their team’s business rationale for designing, marketing and developing their App proof of concept.
With greater competition, more support and a grander stage, the stakes are higher for the App-Prentice Challenge 2019. Final prizes have still to be confirmed but EntFest 2019 is set to provide an exciting celebratory end to the event for the final showdown between the school’s winning teams.
EntFest will showcase an exhibition of the App-prentice Challenge winners’ projects in a dedicated “You Make the Future” hub where the festivals’ students and business leaders will be able to vote on their favourite App concept. The Festival votes will be combined with judging by Nick Hewer, former business adviser to Lord Sugar on BBC’s The Apprentice, ready for the Festival Awards Closing Ceremony. There, the overall winning team of the App-Prentice Challenge 2019 will be crowned tech champions by successful entrepreneur, star of TV’s Dragon’s Den, and founder of the Peter Jones Foundation, Peter Jones CBE.
